A beautiful city in Zeeland.
For me, Zierikzee is one of the most beautiful Dutch monument towns. A tour is definitely worth it.
There are also numerous shops between all the pretty historic buildings. Zierikzee has a good shopping offer with many beautiful boutiques, in addition to the large chains where you can find clothing and jewelry. Afterwards you can take a break or go for something to eat on one of the café terraces, for example on Havenplein, with a view of the harbor.
City rights
In 1248 Zierikzee was granted town rights. The city was a strategically important place in Zeeland at the end of the Middle Ages.
Thick tower
The “Thick Tower” rises high above Zierikzee. The tower of St. Lieven Minster, which you can climb via 279 steps, offers a beautiful view of Zierikzee, the Zeeland Bridge and the island.
New church
The “New Church” next to the Thick Tower is at least as impressive. It was built between 1835 and 1848 to replace the destroyed St. Lieven Minster, of which only the Thick Tower remained.
City gates
To protect Zierikzee from the harbor, two large city gates were built in the 14th century: Zuidhavenpoort and Noordhavenpoort. There are historic boats and ships in the nearby New Harbor. Opposite the city gates is the Old Harbor, which is lined with historic houses. A double bascule bridge runs across the water of the Old Harbor between Zuidhavenpoort and Noordhavenpoort. From there you have a beautiful view over the harbor.
Stadhuis Museum
The “Stadhuis Museum” is now located in the town hall (Stadhuis) of Zierikzee, which dates back to the 16th century. There you will learn everything about the history of the port city and the many listed buildings.
