The terminal moraine landscape around Grabauer See was formed at the end of the last ice age over 12,000 years ago.

In 1486 the Norderbeste was dammed to form a 64-hectare fish pond. The Grabauer See, also known as the Hohendammer Mühlenteich, first belonged to the Borstel estate, then from 1806 to the Grabau estate. In 1936 the Wehrmacht bought the pond. After 1945 it remained in public ownership and was leased for the purpose of carp farming. For this he was released annually.

In 1993, the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Stormarn acquired the pond and the surrounding area with the aim of realizing nature conservation. In 2011-2014, the fishing rights, which initially remained leased, were subject to the condition that extensive, ecologically compatible fishing was set up. Since this did not happen, the foundation took over the exclusive right of use in 2014 and ended commercial fishing.

On the south bank is the site of the Grabau nature experience, an educational institution of the Sparkasse Holstein Foundation. Their activities have made the lake a popular destination. On the east bank, a hiking trail allows views of the water surface. The west and north banks are inaccessible to visitors.
