A first church was probably built in the mid-10th century, when the village Münder was reclassified from the mission area of the monastery Fulda in the diocese of Minden. In 1440, the construction of a Gothic stone church with a massive defensive tower and belfry began. After destruction in the Hildesheim Stift feud (1519), the nave was repaired. The tower was rebuilt in its present form in 1528.
With the introduction of the Reformation in Münder the church was handed over in 1543 to the Protestant worship.

The 58 meter high steeple of the evangelical Petri-Pauli-Kirche is a striking landmark of the city of Bad Münder and at the same time it is the oldest surviving part of the church. The baroque spire dates from 1751 and it was extensively renovated from 2005 to 2009.
Today's church is named after a church consecrated to Peter from the early Middle Ages, which is said to have stood in the same place.
