The moor is a very special habitat, it is an ecological transition zone between solid land and water. Without water, there is no moor. Moors can form anywhere on earth where there is sufficient water and the climate allows peat-forming vegetation. There are even moors beyond the Arctic Circle, on the sea coasts of the subtropics and in the rainforest areas of the tropics.
After the end of the last ice age, when the climate gradually warmed up again, moors began to form in large areas. During this period, there was a lot of precipitation. The ice sheets melted and released more water. The groundwater level rose, and numerous valleys, depressions and lowlands were flooded.

The vegetation changed, and moisture-loving plants grew more and more. Moors formed on the stalks where the plants could not be broken down even after they died. The heyday of moors began around 12,000 years ago in our latitudes.
