In Altenburg, not only stands what is probably the oldest church in South Tyrol, but also another church built right above it, about a millennium later. This is the Church of St. Vigil, dedicated to St. Vigilius, Bishop of Trent. This saint is particularly venerated today in South Tyrol and Trentino. A church on this site was mentioned as early as the mid-9th century in the Letter of St. Vigilius, and subsequently in 1288, 1326, and 1390. A castle also stood enthroned on this porphyry dome in ancient times.

Altenburg is 612 m high and around 6 km from the actual town center of Kaltern and is also known for the hiking trail through the Rastenbachklamm.
On the edge of the village we find the Gothic curate church of St. Vigilius with colorful glazed roof tiles. The current form of the church dates back to the 14th century. On the tower of the church you can also admire the oldest wall painting in Kaltern, which depicts St. Christopher and was created around 1320.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Vigil in Altenburg near Kaltern in South Tyrol is a late Gothic building. The curate church of the parish Maria Himmelfahrt in Kaltern, consecrated to St. Vigilius of Trient, stands on a porphyry hill, on which there was once a castle complex that has now disappeared.
