The Old Believers, also called the Philipons, did not recognize Patriarch Nikon's reforms introduced in the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century. Persecuted for their religious beliefs, they were forced to emigrate. The first Old Believers came to Masuria in the 1820s, initially from the Suwałki-Sejny region, and later also from the depths of Russia. The history of the Masurian Old Believers is closely related to the Wojnowski monastery. The origins of the monastery date back to 1836. when the old man Lavrenty Rastropin (1762-1851) founded a small hermitage on the shores of Lake Duś. In 1847 it was transformed into a monastery, the first igumen (prior) of which was Mikhail Khavronin, and in 1849 the monastery became a branch of the famous Old Believer center in Moscow, known as the Prieobrażenski Cemetery. As a result of intensifying repressions against Old Believers in Russia, the Wojnowski monastery became a refuge for many persecuted. The monastery flourished in the years 1852-1867, when Paweł Pruski was the igumen (Pieter Ivanovich Lednev, 1821-1895). On his initiative, a printing house is established in nearby Pisz. In 1867, Paweł leaves Masuria, goes to Russia, and becomes a monarchy, subordinated to the hierarchy of the Orthodox Church.

Currently a privately owned museum, cafe and a guesthouse. Admission ticket 10 PLN per person.
