The nautical school was founded on April 5, 1808 by Ludwig Suhl, the director of the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities. The helmsman Johann Henrich Sahn began teaching in 1808 as head of the school and as its first teacher with 17 helmsman students. In 1826 the school moved to the house on the wall. Mayor Mattheus Rodde made the house available. Captains and helmsmen of the merchant marine were trained here for all trades, including deep sea and coastal fishing. In 1969, the state government of Schleswig-Holstein arranged for the Lübeck Maritime School to be divided into the departments of Maritime and Technology.

Many capable seafarers have acquired the tools for their tough job at the navigation school or seafaring school in Lübeck.
Because the Senate had decided on March 31, 1827 that no one was allowed to serve as a helmsman on a Lübeck ship who had not previously passed an examination, experienced men crammed over the Kaisertor the little multiplication table in the truest sense of the word. Because arithmetic and reading had never been her thing before. And so, in addition to all the nautical theories, they learned the arithmetic skills of elementary school students. And they received German lessons. Incidentally, those were the only hours in which Low German was not officially spoken. The further development of this nautical institute in key words: 1914 conversion of the navigation school into the "nautical school". 1937 The school was taken over by the state of Prussia. In 1938 it was subordinated to the Reich. In 1948 it finally became the cultural sovereignty of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The country renames it the "Lübeck State Maritime School". That was in 1965 and in 1969 she turned it into the "Lübeck State University of Applied Sciences for Technology and Seafaring".

Finally, since 1979 it has been a "technical school for seafaring". In 1991, the state finally decided to move the school to Flensburg. In the meantime, the Computer Science department of the Medical University had moved into the house. The building, which is a listed building, housed the mathematical institutes of the University of Lübeck from October 1993 to November 2011.
