The Buchberg is the local mountain of Mattsee and with a height of 801 m one of the most striking mountains in the northern Salzburg Flachgau. The summit is east of Obertrumersee and south of Mattsee, but almost 300 m higher than the two bodies of water. Accordingly, the Buchberg can be reached in different ways from Obertrum and Mattsee. Because of the very dense network of trails, especially on the south side of the Buchberg, there are also many other ways to reach the highest point on the road at the Buchbergwirt excursion inn at 740 m from the south and east.
The last few meters up to the wooded peak are reserved for hikers.
From the inn you have a wonderful view to the south and can enjoy an alpine panorama from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Dachstein. This view alone justifies the relatively short, but sometimes quite steep, approach to this high point.
The Buchberg can be included in almost every tour to the lakes in the north of Salzburg (Wallersee, Grabensee or to the Mattsee and Obertrumersee already mentioned). A combination with the Haunsberg further to the west, the Haßberg or the Tannberg to the east is also conceivable.
