The Church of St. Peter and Paul is the most important church building in Weissensee. Although it was a town church for centuries and was not only repeatedly rebuilt and enlarged, but also badly damaged in several town fires and subsequently renovated, it is another Romanesque building that has been preserved within the town limits. The town of Weissensee was built around 1200 and incorporated the existing settlement south of Runneburg (Weissensee Castle) and thus also its elaborate Romanesque hall church of St. Nikolai.
