Grassalkovich I built a beautiful French-style garden around the castle of Gödöllő in the middle of the 18th century. The ornamental courtyard was decorated with tubular orange and lemon trees, and it was at this time that the lion fountain was built. In the garden, which opened from the ornamental courtyard, there were straight paths and rows of trees, carefully designed, regularly shaped flower beds with special, rare plants. There were fountains in the garden, statues and a maze.
At the beginning of the 19th century Grassalkovich III. Antal rebuilt the park according to the English pattern: the regular formations were replaced by winding roads imitating natural forms, groups of wooded trees, and swan lakes were established in front of the castle.
In the second half of the 19th century, the park was renovated in a romantic style for Queen Elizabeth and Franz Joseph, enriching the flora. Separate gardens were created in front of the royal couple's suites, and Queen Elizabeth's garden was made an even more comfortable place to relax. The flower seedlings were grown in the garden of the castle, where a palm house and a greenhouse were also built.
In the 20th century, at the request of Governor Miklós Horthy, a swimming pool and a tennis court were added to the castle park, and a bunker was built for him under the Queen's garden in the II. at the end of World War II.
The central part of the 26-hectare park was renovated in 2009-2010 on an area of 5.2 hectares as a romantic landscape garden.
