The synagogue, inaugurated on Neue Strasse in autumn 1883, was broken into by members of the SS on November 10, 1938, and the interior was destroyed and set on fire. The synagogue burned out completely.
In 1987 the city of Lemgo erected a memorial on this site to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust. The east and west gables as well as the floor plan walls were reconstructed in their original size. In 1999, plaques were put up naming the murdered Jewish fellow citizens.

Using the space that the synagogue occupied before it was destroyed for a memorial is a very adequate and impressive way of commemorating. Here we, who did not have to experience this barbarism ourselves, should pause for a moment.
