She took over after the death of her father Charles VI. the government and implemented numerous long-lasting reforms. The devout Catholic showed little tolerance towards members of other denominations.

          The original monument to Empress Maria Theresa was created in 1765 by Balthasar Ferdinand Moll of Hartblei and replaced an equestrian statue of Emperor Leopold. The first Maria Theresa monument was replaced in 1870 by a bronze sculpture by Franz Pönninger. Rudolf Bayer created the pilaster base. In 1972 the monument was moved from the west to the east side of Neuer Platz.

            In 1765, the first monument to Empress Maria Theresa in Austria was erected on the west side of the New Square. The artistically valuable statue made of hard lead was designed by the Viennese Balthasar Moll, a student of Raffael Donner, but was replaced in 1873 by a bronze sculpture by Franz Pönninger. In 1972, the monument was moved to the east side of the New Square when the underground car park was built.
