Nice far view on Mayen and the Genovevaburg.
Around 300 AD, a fortress was built on the Mayen Katzenberg. With an area of 1.2 hectares, Katzenberg is the largest known late Roman refuge in the Rhineland.
The vantage point on the highest point of the Katzenberg served to observe the surrounding area and, in the event of an emergency, also made it possible to transmit signals to other, smaller fortifications along the Nette.
