In the wake of the prestigious Romanesque religious constructions, private buildings of a similar style will soon be built by the bourgeoisie and representatives of the city. Together with its neighbor, this house constitutes a remarkable testimony to the bourgeois civil architectural production of the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries (1175 and 1200) in the Scheldt valley.
The Tournai stone rubble facade is made up of three levels and a gable on the street. It is marked horizontally by continuous bands. Redesigned over time, the ground floor features a door and a mullion bay restored in contemporary materials. The floors are lit by two rows of bay windows with central columns. These are either contemporary or adorned with a capital with stylized leaves (second floor). The gable is pierced with two window registers. The first is characterized by two bays similar to the others, while the second is open with a small rectangular bay.
The building is covered with a posterior saddle roof of flat tiles which was originally to be covered with lead, like the roofs of Romanesque churches. The building, which, like the construction which suffered it, suffered damage during the Second World War, was restored between 1970 and 1972 and currently houses a Protestant temple.

In rue Barre Saint-Brice, the gables of two remarkable Romanesque houses (1175-1200) rise. A monolithic column interrupts the windows located between two horizontal bands of natural stone. As prototypes of Flemish stone architecture, they are among the first examples of this type of housing in Western Europe.

In the Gothic mansion (15th century) in the same street you can still notice a Romanesque style, but the house also shows the characteristics of Gothic architecture. The decoration of the continuous bands is more finished and there is more regularity in the size of the natural stones.

At the Eglise Saint-Brice there are two houses with a 12th century facade. Windows with a sub-column are fitted between two natural stone edges. The buildings are among the few surviving examples of bourgeois Scheldt-Roman architecture. One has a Protestant church, the other an art gallery.
