Bälau, first mentioned in a document in 1194, is one of the small villages of the Breitenfelde office with 245 inhabitants. The community area covers 650 hectares of fertile terminal moraine with a high proportion of forest in the west of the district. Land consolidation took place as early as 1959.
The aforementioned story of the knight Nicolaus de Belowe is only part of the exciting story of Bälau.
Here in the village, St. Birgitta of Sweden also built her first monastery on German soil. She was an impressive woman, already made a pilgrimage in the Middle Ages - like Hape Kerkeling - to Santiago de Compostela, among others, and fought for the recognition of her order for 20 years. The Pope canonized her after her death.
These important events in the history of Bälau are immortalized on a memorial stone.

Bälau is a municipality in the Duchy of Lauenburg district in Schleswig-Holstein.

The village of Belowe was first documented in 1194 and is of Slavic origin. In the mid-13th century, it belonged to the Reinbek Monastery and later passed to the Schack family. In 1413, monks from the St. Bridgets' Monastery of Mariendal near Reval settled here and shortly thereafter acquired Bälau and half of Breitenfelde.

In 1428, the monastery was relocated to Marienwolde. Monks and nuns of the St. Bridgets' Order, who had been resident in Bälau until 1428, also acquired a farm in Lübeck near the intersection of Balauerfohr and Wahmstraße in 1431.

In 1995, the village received the Gold Plaque in the federal competition "Our Village Should Become More Beautiful."
