Sometimes almshouses were founded in the 19th century, although they were not always called that anymore. This is the case, for example, with the Zeemansasyl in Brielle, which was founded in 1872. This courtyard still aims to provide affordable housing for the elderly – although you no longer have to be a sailor to be allowed to live in it.

Originally this building was intended solely for housing sailors, but nowadays it functions as regular rental housing. It is located in a beautiful location, adjacent to a well-maintained rose park. The statue "The Sea Nymph," which was unveiled by King William III, symbolizes the regained freedom. The nymph points with her hand in the direction of the mouth of the Meuse, from where the liberators, the Water Beggars, arrived.
