Mützenich is located on the Belgian border, in the catchment area of the High Fens, below the highest elevation of the Aachen region, the Steling (658 m above sea level NHN).
Through the route of the now degraded Vennbahn Mützenich is next to other districts Monschaus and Roetgens an exclave of Germany, which is completely enclosed by Belgium. The Vennbahntrasse, like some forest areas previously belonging to Mützenich, has been part of Belgian territory since 1920 under the terms of the Versailles Treaty. Right and left of the Vennbahntrasse the boundary stones can be found in the area.
After the end of the Second World War, Belgium planned to annex the ensign created by the Vennbahn, but dropped these plans again in April 1949.

The summit of the Steling is in a very beautiful forest. You can buy home-made Eifelsteig souvenirs here - that's kind of nice ...
However, there is a great view only a few meters away at the Eifel-Blick

The Steling is with 658.3 m above sea level. NN the highest elevation in the city region Aachen. The German-Belgian border runs over the hilltop.
The Steling is located on the western edge of the Hohes Venn-Eifel nature park. At its southern foot lies Mützenich, a district of Monschau. On the northern slope is the headwaters of the Weser, which flows through the Weser dam at Eupen after Liège in the Ourthe.
