      It is a very special experience when the lake fills with water overnight. If you are lucky, you can witness this event in spring. At this time, the lake is sometimes dried out, covered with snow remnants and then it can happen that the lake floor miraculously fills up overnight.

      This is due to the numerous springs that bring the clear, cold water from the Dachstein plateau here. The Koppenwinkellacke is a karst body of water and is fed underground by the rising water. When there is a large supply of water, the Bühlerbach and Hagenbach also become really active. There are no fish in the Koppenwinkelsee, but the flora is hard to beat!

      This is how you get there
      The idyllic lake can be reached in just 15 minutes on foot from the Koppenbrüllerhöhle train station. Both on foot and by bike, it is an easy and very interesting hike in the valley. If you walk a few minutes further, you come to the Koppenwinkelalm, one of the deepest alpine pastures in the Dachstein Salzkammergut.
