The port of Pórto Lágos itself is not necessarily more beautiful than many other ports on Greece's coast. A handful of taverns, colorful fishing boats, small yachts ... Not necessarily of tourist importance - no ferries to any islands leave here and the region itself is not necessarily one of the main destinations in the country. What is special about the small port town, however, is its unique location in the middle of the Thracian coastal lowlands between the cities of Xanthi and Komotini. Pórto Lágos is located on a narrow headland that separates the shallow Vistonis lagoon, which is used as winter quarters and breeding ground for rare and protected bird species, from the open sea. Numerous bird colonies of wild geese, herons and pelicans cavort on the sandbanks of this shallow lake.
