In 1249, Prince Pribislaw I of Mecklenburg founded the new town of Parchim on the western bank of the Elde River. This coincided with the start of construction of the imposing St. Mary's Church. The church was consecrated on June 19, 1278, by Bishop Hermann I of Schladen of Schwerin and his brother, Auxiliary Bishop Ludolf of Schladen.

Construction of the Gothic brick church began around 1250. The church was not completed until the early 14th century. A two-bay, High Gothic extension with a star vault was added to the north side in the 15th century. The choir, after being classified as dilapidated in 1869, was completely renovated in 1908. The vaults and buttresses date from the 14th century. The west tower, built in 1310, was modeled on the towers of St. Mary's Church in Lübeck.

St. Mary's Church in Parchim is a legendary brick building on a fieldstone base dating from the transition from late Romanesque to early Gothic. It was consecrated in 1278. Among the most valuable parts of the interior are the baptismal font from 1365, the 15th-century altarpiece, the pulpit, organ loft, and organ front. Also noteworthy are Jewish gravestones from the 13th and 14th centuries.

In 1908, the choir walls were painted by the Parchim artist
W. Schomann. Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke was baptized in this church.
