Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, the superb Saint-Étienne cathedral stands out for the uniformity of its style, which is mainly Gothic. Indeed, the initial plan was respected over the centuries throughout the construction period.

The cathedral is also distinguished by its windows, the surface area of which is the largest in France. In the same way, its vaults are among the highest among French churches.

Metz Cathedral, otherwise the Cathedral of Saint Stephen, Metz (French: Cathédrale Saint Étienne de Metz), is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Metz, capital of Lorraine, France.[2] It is dedicated to Saint Stephen. First begun in the early 14th century, it was joined together with the collegiate church of Notre-Dame in the mid-14th century, and given a new transept and late Gothic chevet, finished between 1486 and 1520.[3] It is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metz as the seat of the bishops of Metz.[4] The cathedral treasury displays the collection, assembled over 1,000 years, of the bishopric of Metz, including paraments and items used for the Eucharist.[

The cathedral is magnificent from the outside. As soon as you enter, you are overwhelmed by architecture and silence.

The cathedral Saint-Etienne, in German the Stephansdom, belongs with its 42 m high nave to the largest Gothic church buildings in Europe and its stained glass windows with a total area of 6500 m² (from the 13th to the 20th century, including some by Chagall) have given it the nickname "the lantern of God".

Or St. Stephen's Cathedral. Cathedral that has the largest number of panes of glass. Over 6000. Part of the Camino de Santiago through France. In it you get the pilgrim's stamp. Definitely worth seeing. In particular the rose window. In the colored panes you can find the representation of Saint James.

After the Sankt Stephan church in Mainz, this is the second great church that I can experience with windows designed by Marc Chagall. A completely different visual language than that of the Middle Ages, but no less impressive!

Even for me as an absolute atheist, large churches are fascinating and this cathedral, built in 1220, commands massive respect for its builders. Simply amazing and also the church with the most windows in Central Europe (I hope I translated that correctly).
From the 1870s to the beginning of the last century, the cathedral was extensively renovated.

A real architectural gem, the Saint-Étienne Cathedral has one of the tallest naves in France (42 m) and stained glass windows that are among the largest in the world. Its 6,500 m2 of stained glass windows, created by the most renowned artists of the time (Herman de Munster, Théobald de Lixheim, Valentin Bousch, Marc Chagall), earned it the nickname "The Lantern of the Good Lord".

The Saint-Étienne Cathedral (German: St. Stephen's Cathedral) in Metz in Lorraine was built between 1220 and 1520 and is considered one of the most beautiful and largest Gothic church buildings in France. With a vault height of more than 41 meters, it has the third highest interior after the cathedrals of Amiens and Beauvais; the area of its stained glass is around 6500 m², the largest in a French cathedral, hence the name La lanterne du Bon Dieu - English: "The Lantern of the Good Lord". It is therefore also one of the masterpieces of the Gothique Rayonnant. It is the episcopal church of the diocese of Metz. Since 1930, the cathedral has been classified as a monument historique (cultural monument) and protected (Wikipedia).

A breathtaking Gothic cathedral. Built from the ochre-colored Jaumont stone of the Metz region, it boasts an incredible height in the nave and enormous windows with stained-glass windows on three levels, including some by Chagall. This makes the interior exceptionally light-filled. A must-see.
