The old fortified church is also located here on the village square of Balhorn.
Description:
Due to its architecture, it is one of the most remarkable village churches in the old district of Wolfhagen.
The main entrance to the church garden and the church is still through the medieval gatehouse. The oldest parts of today's church building date back to the 15th century.
According to an inscription on the ground floor, the tower was built in 1488 at the latest. Today's baroque tower dome was built in 1724.
The nave was significantly rebuilt twice before it got its current appearance. The old Gothic nave was replaced in the years 1743 to 1748 by a classical hall building, as can still be found in many surrounding churches.
Due to its recent redesign, the church differs from the rather unadorned village churches in Lower Hesse and occupies a special position among the evangelical churches. The extensive renovation of the church began in 2006 and was completed in May 2008. After a fire, the interior has been shining in new splendor since 2018.
To visit the church - if not open - the key is to be requested in the adjoining vicarage.
