    The Eixlberg with the pilgrimage church of St. Barbara is a very popular hiking destination - not least because of the Emmausklause. This is located in the former sacristan's house and is managed and operated by the OWV Pfreimd. The perfect place for a break with a hearty snack and cool Upper Palatinate beer.

              The city of Pfreimd has a particularly lovable place, the Eixlberg.
              This is one of the most beautiful places with its pilgrimage church "St. Barbara" and the Emmausklause, as well as the Loretto Chapel.
              It invites with its many hiking trails around or over the Eixlberg for easy walks.
              The starting point is the parking lot, which you can approach via the village of Iffelsdorf. From there you can choose the circular route of approx. 4.2 km or the ascent to the church (10 min. Walk).

                            St. Barbara Pilgrimage Church – Eixelberg

                            According to legend, Landgrave Ulrich II of Leuchtenberg had a chapel built in honor of St. Barbara on the Eixlberg in 1342. It is true that mining was carried out in the Eixlberg area, and this is probably why St. Barbara was chosen as the patron saint of miners for the chapel.
                            In 1621, the chapel building, which had been documented since the first half of the 16th century, was destroyed by Mansfeld troops. Reconstruction was not completed until 1647 with the donation of two bells by the sovereign. As part of the revival of pilgrimages, promoted by Duke Max Philipp, Landgrave of Leuchtenberg, a new building was constructed between 1700 and 1702 by master builder Johann Meier from Neustadt an der Waldnaab. The consecration did not take place until 1711.
                            The recessed choir comprises two bays and a three-sided end. The nave has four bays. The choir and nave have barrel vaults with pointed arches on corbelled entablatures.
                            The high altar, dating from 1713 and featuring an early 16th-century image, was made by the carpenter Johann Jakob Schöpf and the sculptor Christian Träxl. It depicts St. Joseph of Nazareth with the Christ Child. Statues of St. George and St. Florian stand to the sides. The side altars are later works from 1739 by the Amberg carpenter Georg Wolf Bacher and the sculptor Johann Peter Hirsch, who also worked in Amberg. The current side altarpieces date from the 19th century and were created by the Amberg painter Joh. Baptist Ernstberger.
