Elafonissi is a small island 200 m from the shore of Crete. Between the island and the shore there is a shallow lagoon in which the water is a maximum of one meter deep.
The pink sand that is deposited along the water's edge is created by the large amount of mussels that are finely rubbed by the ocean current.
It is said that it is the dream beach of Crete, with a Caribbean flair.
Of course, many other visitors see it that way and accordingly it is very crowded.
There are taverns nearby, parking spaces, as well as sun loungers, parasol rentals, changing rooms, toilets and showers on the beach

The sand right at the water's edge is pink, but don't be fooled by the advertising photos and holiday brochures. In any case, we didn't find the beach so beautifully "colored" over a large area as it is shown in many photos. Under certain circumstances you can be a bit disappointed on site if you have made a longer journey for this view.

It's not a very long walk but take some water with you because it can get really hot and walking in the sand is taxing pretty quickly. It is really worth to get to the top and to see the island fully. The view is amazing!

Once you arrive, you shouldn't be disappointed, even in the off-season you are by no means alone there - the beach is too well known.

But it is beautiful there - Caribbean feeling on Crete! Crystal clear water and reddish shell deposits - the best thing to do is wade onto the island, it is much quieter there.
