The cemetery was officially inaugurated on September 6, 1959. Before that, the soldiers who died in World War II had been buried by the American burial service in five collective cemeteries in the region. From 1946 the reburial of the fallen from the collective cemeteries to Lommel began. As a result, not only the former temporary collective cemeteries of Henri-Chapelle, Fosse, Overrepen and Neuville-en-Condroz were dissolved, but also the German military cemetery from World War I in Leopoldsburg with 542 dead. Of 13,000 unknown soldiers, 7,000 were subsequently identified. Over 30,000 people visit the cemetery every year.

Since 1953, the German War Graves Commission has looked after the cemetery. He maintains a large information center there and also a youth meeting place. About 25 to 30,000 people visit this cemetery every year. In May 1995 a ginkgo tree was planted as a sign of hope and remembrance of the war and the first use of nuclear weapons on August 6, 1945 over Hiroshima. A commemorative plaque reads in 3 languages: "As a sign of the hope of peace. Planted on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the end of the war”. In the center of the cemetery is a memorial column originally erected in the Brussels-Evere cemetery.

The German Military Cemetery (Deutsche Kriegsgräberstatte Lommel) is a cemetery in Kattenbos in the Belgian municipality of Lommel. Mostly German soldiers who fell during the Second World War rest here. In addition, a smaller number of soldiers who died during the First World War are buried there. As far as the Second World War is concerned, it is the largest German military cemetery outside of Germany in Western Europe. The official dedication of the cemetery took place in 1959. According to the Geneva Convention, fallen soldiers, also abroad, have the "Right to Eternal Rest".

The site is 16 hectares and there are more than 38,000 soldiers from the Second World War. Most of these come from collective cemeteries in Hendrik-Kapelle, Fosse, Overrepen and Neuville-en-Condroz. There they were temporarily buried by the American Graves Agency (U.S. Battle Monument Commission), to be transferred to Lommel in 1946 and 1947. Since 1946, when the Belgian government started the construction of the cemetery, all German soldiers from the Second World War found on Belgian territory have been buried here. The 483 soldiers from the First World War come from a soldier cemetery in Leopoldsburg. In 2016, a total of 39,108 were killed.[1] The number has increased slightly over time because remains of missing fallen soldiers were found, for example because the government proceeded to salvage aircraft wrecks. In 2008, for example, the remains of three people from the Luftwaffe were interred. On September 21, 2019, on the International Day of Peace, three unknown soldiers were interred in memory of 75 years of liberation and the 100th anniversary of the German War Graves Service. A "peace bell" was also cast on this special occasion, which was then placed in the courtyard in front of the crypt.

As a memorial to the many war dead, places like this depressing "Duitse Militaire Begraafplaats" in Lommel, Belgium, are still very important today. "Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace, as you have said..." it says in the so-called "Hymn of Simeon" (Luke's Gospel, Chapter 2, Verse 29). However, the incredible number of the almost 40,000 people buried here did not depart in peace, but became senseless victims of war and tyranny. The most important and everlasting function of such monuments (in German-speaking countries mostly referred to as soldiers' cemeteries or war graves) is therefore to remind each generation anew of the need to permanently preserve peace.

There is a nice quiet cycle path around this German Military Field of Honour. That gives a nice opportunity to think in silence about what an enormous destruction of young life war actually is and how useless it is. To recover you can eat and drink something in the gatehouse.
