The cemetery for the victims of the First World War, laid out in several stages between 1914 and 1927, is located on the Duisburg Kaiserberg. The symmetrically structured cemetery complex is completely surrounded by a natural stone wall. “The forest character has preserved its origin in rare completeness. Dry stone walls absorb the differences in height of the site, which, together with numerous elements such as sculptures, tombstones, stairways and walls, structures the room and at the same time forms a unity. The forecourt impresses with its size, on which individual trees are staged and the view up to Netzers Siegfried looks like a temple. Very interesting visual relationships emerge and make the geometrical arrangements understandable. What is interesting is the shape of the abscissa, a special design that is attached to the sides of the middle section ”(Thiel 2001, p. 111).

Originally, 104 victims of the First World War were to be buried on the 0.85 hectare site, but the complex was finally expanded to 829 graves. On the lawn in front of the cemetery stood Wilhelm Lehmbruck's "Seated Youth" (mourner) as a memorial and "counter figure" to the young Siegfried, who was erected in 1921, from 1922 to 1944. However, the sculpture did not correspond to the hero cult and the Nazi art ideas and was removed. The figure, damaged by a bomb attack, is now in the town museum and has never been put back in its original place.
