The Danube disappears at Immendingen and leaves behind an empty stony river bed for around 155 days a year.

The water is sucked into the porous limestone layers through the "sinkholes" in the ground and flows through underground cavities into the Aach spring some 12 km away. There it reappears after 60 hours. The Danube water follows the natural gradient of 183 meters above sea level. Anyone walking on the parallel hiking trail above the river bed can easily see the swallowing points.

It is impressive to see how the water suddenly seeps into the ground at this point. The exit point of the water at the Aach source in Aach should also be visited.

Part of the water seeps away throughout the year. However, the Danube only disappears completely in the summer months. Depending on the weather, you can hike through the river bed from mid-May to mid-September with dry feet. You can then go looking for fossils in the dry river bed.

The fact that the Danube seeps away in Baden because it does not want to see the misery there shortly before the border to Württemberg is a legend that has always been cultivated by the people of Baden. Quite understandable, as the Danube Canal in Tuttlingen was for a long time more of a sewer for shoe and metal factories and tanneries. Today the Danube has 'good' water quality.

During our visit in February, all that could be seen of the seepage was small whirlpools, but funny slurping noises could be heard at the points where the water disappears. Many panels also refer to the natural spectacle.
