Woerkum, as the fortress residents call Woudrichem, is a sturdy fortress located on the Merwede and has good neighbors such as fortress Gorinchem and Slot Loevestein. This fortress town is worth a visit. Wander along the centuries-old facades, visit the historic harbor and contemplate this history on a beautiful terrace. The area is excellent for walking and cycling and with the ferry you can make a round along the entire Fortress Triangle.
As a fortress town, Woudrichem was part of both the Old and the New Dutch Waterline. Together with fortress Gorinchem, it ensured that the river Waal was closed off to the enemy. The artillery supported fortress Gorinchem, Slot Loevestein and Fort Vuren. Much has been preserved from that time, such as bastions, ravelins, a guard house, a bomb-proof arsenal, the Marechaussee barracks and the waterworks outside the gate.
