The mill is a particularly interesting building for the Hanover region, here the windmill was placed on the building of a former water mill.

The watermill was first mentioned in 1689, in the von Altschen estate files a miller with his wife and children is mentioned.

Between 1851 and 1859, today's windmill was built on the remains of the old water mill.

Originally the mill had 2 stone grinding stages, a boat-shaped mill hood and was turned into the wind with a star.

In 1895 the mill hood was converted to today's onion shape, the star was replaced by a compass rose. The canopy could now turn independently into the wind with its sail wings.

The next renovation took place in the 1930s, the grinding technology was brought up to date and a double roller mill now supplied the flour in demand. During this renovation, the wooden vertical shaft was retained and extended with a steel shaft inserted below in order to drive the main transmission located on the ground floor.

In 1958 the mill was shut down and the mill wings had to be removed at the beginning of the 1960s, except for the breast pieces that are still present today.

In 1985 the exterior of the building was renovated, and in 1995 the mill was converted into a residential area. A significant part of the drive technology was retained and integrated into the residential mill.

Today the windmill is a defining landmark and landmark of Lathwehren-Dunau.
