At this point there is an information board about the Chahorra volcano. It is the closest crater to the Teide crater. On the other side of the street you have a great panoramic view. Really very impressive and very surreal. You can see La Gomera and, in good weather, even El Hierro, a smaller island in the Canary Islands.

The Mirador Narices del Teide (the nostrils of the Teide) is the highest point that you can drive from the western coast of Tenerife to the Cañadas plateau. It lies in the midst of a landscape of cold lava flows at the foot of the Pico Viejo, which last erupted in 1798.

These so-called nostrils on the west side of the Pico Viejo were created in the course of the last volcanic eruption on the floor of the national park, which did not exist at the time. It erupted at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters and the Magma Railway flowed out of the volcano for several months. The eruption lasted from June 9th to November 8th, making it the longest known eruption in the history of Tenerife.

The lava has a total area of 5 square kilometers. The type of eruption varied depending on the location of the crater. While only liquid magma flowed from the lower craters, there were real explosions in the higher craters.
