Location and history: The Karlstein is a memorial stone in the vineyards near Endersbach andStockelbach (both districts of Weinstadt east of Stuttgart). Not far from the barbecue area there is a vantage point at about 426 m above sea level, which offers a wide view of the Remstal and as far as Stuttgart. There is a barbecue area with a children's playground right on the edge of the forest. The barbecue area was created in 1992 and renovated in 2006 and 2018. The swing and the seesaw as well as two tables were renewed in the summer of 2015. As part of the Remstal Garden Show 2019, two new barbecue areas were created in August 2018 and the tables and benches were completely renewed.
The Karlstein goes back to a settlement of district disputes betweenStockelbach and Endersbach by Duke Carl Eugen von Württemberg in 1793, when the two places were fighting over forest ownership. In gratitude for this arbitration, a large memorial stone was erected in the forest.
This memorial stone from 1793 bears the inscription:
"This stone
be
for eternal memory
of the best country fathers
CARLS
Duke of Württemberg
this here
between the Endersbachers
andStockelbach community
forest disputes
happily mourned
6.7. June 1793”
This memorial stone was exhibited for a long time in the Endersbach local history museum. He was later transferred to the Silcher elementary school for reasons of space.
In 1973, the sculptor Karl Ulrich Nuss, who lives inStockelbach, designed and erected a new stone.
The inscription on the new stone reads:
"In eternal memory of the most gracious father
of the fatherland Karl Duke of Württemberg
of the disputes over forest areas between
Endersbach andstockinglbach
finally solemn here
and happily settled
on June 7, 1793”
In 2012, the Association of Friends of Karlstein put the restored stone from 1793 back in its original place.
The association has made it its task to keep the memory of the settlement of the forest dispute alive through appropriate actions. As a rule, this takes the form of an event on New Year's morning.
