The Pleinfelder Gate marks the end of Pleinfelder Straße and the beginning of Rosental Street. The gate is located in the north of Ellingen's old town, east of the castle park, at an altitude of 398 m above sea level.[2]

The previous building dates from the 16th century; the current early Baroque building dates from 1660 and is thus the oldest part of the city fortifications.[3] At the highest point of Ellingen's old town is the gate tower, which is flanked by two round towers. The massive Pleinfelder Gate is decorated with the coat of arms of the Teutonic Order.[4] The gate now houses a local history museum and a toy museum.[5] The building is part of the Ellingen Baroque circular trail.

The Pleinfelder Gate is Ellingen's striking landmark, located at the highest point in the old town. A three-towered structure decorated with coats of arms and rusticated gate openings. Completed in 1660. Today a museum. Next to it, to the west of the city wall, is the former Jewish slaughterhouse.
