Old charcoal burner for charcoal production

In the woods one finds stone relics of small round huts at every step, under whose conical grass roof carboners (Koehler) lived at times. You worked independently or for a landowner. Here and there the oven that went with it, simply piled up with stones, was preserved. All around, there are numerous round, flat squares delimited with mossy stones. Then the sitjas (charcoal piles) glowed in spring and autumn.

For the extraction of charcoal one often used waste wood from the country estates. Mostly, however, trees from the flatter areas of the mountains were used, which were divided into ranxos of about 5 hectares. In order to guarantee reforestation, these were only allowed to be used every 7 years - a regulation that was not always adhered to. The round foundations were mostly made of clay; gaps were left between the stones to regulate the air circulation. The wood was stacked on top of this, leaving a duct free for the smoke outlet in the middle. Finally, the pile was covered with branches, straw and earth, the wood was ignited and evenly charred by a precisely metered supply of air - a process that lasted a week or a week and had to be monitored continuously.

Lime was a material in demand in the construction industry – as a binder for mortar or as a coat of paint on walls. Where limestone was as pure as possible, a hole about 2 m wide and deep was dug into a sloping slope. This was lined with a stone wall and a protective layer of clay; Finally, a kind of vault was built from large stones. Only gaps for the air supply and an opening for filling in the fuel remained free.

The fire, which was then kindled under the filled limestone, generated temperatures of around 1000°C, at which point the carbon dioxide escaped and pure lime remained. Each burning process lasted between one and three weeks and consumed around 10 tons of wood. This produced about 100 to 300 tons of lime, which was "slaked" with water. Quicklime was found i.a. use as a disinfectant.

Remains of lime kilns can be found anywhere on the island where there is suitable limestone - but especially on the south-east side of the Serra de Tramuntana, from where it was relatively easy to bring the lime to the capital Palma.
