The proposed route over the Sint Pietersberg goes over an area closed to traffic (including cyclists). It is sometimes unclear due to the differences in access regulations. More is possible in the Walloon area (cycling is allowed on roads wider than 2.5 meters, unless explicitly prohibited). In the Flemish and Dutch area it is actually the other way around and you are only allowed to cycle on the indicated MTB route (technical black route). However, the Walloon area is wedged into Dutch and Flemish area. The nuisance experienced in this busy Natura 2000 area means that more and more enforcement action is being taken (fines have actually been issued since autumn 2024).
It would be nice if there was also a through road for gravel bikes. There is a lobby going on for that purpose. This does require goodwill from the landowners. So stop the wild cycling and stay on the indicated paths or stay away.
