The source pool of the Trave in the center of the village of Gießelrade is only 20 kilometers as the crow flies northwest of Travemünde. But instead of flowing directly eastwards towards the sea, the path of the Trave initially runs westwards. It flows 113 kilometers in a semicircular arc until it finally flows into the Baltic Sea (Lübeck Bay).

The Trave (Latin Travena or Ptolemaic Chalusus Fluvius) is a 113 km long river in Schleswig-Holstein that flows into the Baltic Sea.

The Trave has its source in Gießelrade, north of the B 432 between Ahrensbök and Scharbeutz. In the center of the village there is the source pool, which is surrounded by a small area with benches. A red buoy, erected in 1975, shows a length of 124 km. However, this is from 1890, after which the Trave was straightened in several places.

From there it flows in old melt water beds from the last Ice Age and first in a south-westerly direction through the Wardersee to Bad Segeberg and then further south to Bad Oldesloe. The southernmost point is found at Gross Barnitz, only to flow north past Reinfeld and Wesenberg and then to reach Lübeck at Hamberge and Moisling.
