Most of the Hengelhoef nature reserve is occupied by a coniferous forest complex that was created between 1780 and 1830. The age of this forest area is clearly reflected in the name Hengelhoef and the wealth of mushrooms, among other things. The coniferous forests will be replaced in the coming years by beech forest, birch-oak forest and young pine forest. This damage is already partly taking place naturally.

Hengelhoef is both the name of a holiday domain with a campsite of the not undiscussed Oostappen group, where parts of the infrastructure are also rented out for other purposes, and of the nature reserve managed by Limburgs Landschap. They ensure the restoration of the forests at the holiday domain (currently quite a lot of them have been cut down), the other beautiful nature and a very cozy and fascinating visitor center. And you can find all of the latter at limburgs-landen.be/hengelhoef
