The sinkhole on the edge of the Elm between the village of Bornum and the town of Königslutter was caused by collapsing cavities within the layers of shell limestone. It forms a funnel-shaped depression and is fed with water by springs. The sinkhole has a diameter of approx. 60 m and is surrounded by oak, hornbeam and field maple. It forms an important habitat for many animals and plants. Next to the sinkhole is an old orchard meadow on which many yellow cowslips bloom in April / May.
