People settled in the Chur region as early as the Neolithic Age. Archaeologists have found some of these historical settlements and also a Roman road station at this point. The excavation site can be visited and guided tours are also offered: chur.graubuenden.ch/uebersicht-ausflugsziel/roemische-ausgrabungen.

In Welschdörfli, the old town south of the Plessur, several prehistoric settlements and the remains of a Roman road station were found. The Roman conquest a good 2000 years ago is an important part of Chur's settlement history. Excavations and finds from this period can be viewed on the Ackermann site on the Seilerbahnweg.

The protective structures over the archaeological finds from Roman times were built in 1986 according to plans by the Bündner architect Peter Zumthor. They are both a protective shell for the archaeological finds and a museum and architectural jewel. The filigree lamellar construction gives an idea of the original dimensions of the Roman buildings.

The key for the protective structures is available for a fee of CHF 3 and a deposit of CHF 50 in the regional information center of Chur Tourism in the train station. The key can be borrowed during the opening hours of the information center and must be returned on the same day. Chur Tourism also offers interesting tours through the excavations.
