The first section of the Rügendamm over the Ziegelgraben connects Stralsund with the island of Dänholm. Two bascule bridges, one for rail and one for road, allow large ships to pass. The bridge opening times are posted on the bridge keeper's house. You should make a note of them if necessary.

The old Ziegelgraben Bridge, designed as a bascule bridge, is 133 meters long and connects the mainland with the island of Dänholm, which still belongs to Stralsund. The railway and road bridges each consist of three superstructures: two fixed ones with a span of 52 meters each and a movable one with a span of 29 meters. The bridge, which has a mass of 370 tons, is opened for shipping every day at set times. The opening of the bridge enables shipping on the east approach to the port of Stralsund to pass the Rügen dam; it is opened daily at 2:30 a.m. (opening on demand), 5:20 a.m., 8:20 a.m., 12:20 p.m., 5:20 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. for 20 minutes each.
