Kunrau Castle was built from 1859 to 1861 for Theodor Hermann Rimpau, the inventor of the moorland culture.
The architect was a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the architectural style was based on the Berlin villas in the Tiergarten.

Kunrau Castle is the most important of the few remaining structures on the area of the former manor or manor in Kunrau. The castle building is a listed building.

Between 1859 and 1861, Theodor Hermann Rimpau had a mansion surrounded by farm buildings built on the estate, which was soon called Kunrau Castle. This immense amount of money was astonishing, because ten years earlier the rebuilding of the burned-down stables had to be financed and, moreover, the great drought in the years 1875 to 1859 had reduced income.

The architect of the new manor house, a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, based his design on the villa architecture in Berlin-Tiergarten. The result was a two-storey rectangular building, which is placed on a high basement with a mezzanine floor. A four-and-a-half-storey 22.5 m high square tower with open round arcades was erected at the south-west corner of the building.
