The Binger Mouse Tower is a former military and watchtower. He stands on the mouse tower island in the Rhine in front of the Binger district Bingerbrück. The 24,65 meter high toll tower built at the beginning of the 14th century was named after a legend.

The "Mouse Tower" or "Hatto's Tower" got its name from the 10th century stories about Archbishop Hatto II (968-970), who made his subjects starve and locked the rebellious in a barn and burned them. He commented with "Listen, the mice are whistling."
A flock of mice then spilled out of the burning barn and pursued the archbishop, so that he escaped to the lonely tower in the Rhine. But the mice could swim and so the tyrant died in his hiding place, where only the skeleton gnawed by the mice was found!

The legend is now attributed to his predecessor Archbishop Hatto I (891-913) based on the publications of the historian Cornelius Will.

In 1907, Ferdinand Luthmer speculated that the name derived either from the toll tower (Old High German muta = toll), the muserie (= cannon) or the Middle High German mûsen (= to spy, to lurk).

It was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689. In 1845, the Prussian government made provisional repairs for use as a visionary. The Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV had it rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style from 1855 to 1856. From 1850 to 1974 it served as a signal tower for Rhine shipping. The watchtower in the Mouse Tower regulated shipping traffic at the narrow point known as the Binger Loch at the beginning of the Rheinengtal. This function was given up in 1973/74 with the widening of the fairway (blasting of the rocks).
