    "Saint Gallus is said to have personally lived and worked in the Harmersbach Valley – in Zell and Oberharmersbach – before settling in St. Gallen…

    "Long ago, when the Harmersbach Valley was still a wilderness, Saint Gallus lived there as a hermit. His hut stood by a well and a thorn bush, from which beautiful songs sometimes sounded.

    One day, a bear came to the saint and held out its paw, in which a large thorn was stuck. Gallus pulled it out, and the grateful animal led him to a rock, where he found a quantity of wild honey; it never left his side, bringing him wood and performing other services.

    After the crowds of people flocking to the saint had become very large, he withdrew an hour further into the valley, to the spot where the parish church of Oberharmersbach, dedicated to him, now stands. But also Here, he couldn't escape the influx, so he and his bear traveled to Switzerland, where he later founded the monastery of St. Gallen. Despite his distance, people still made pilgrimages to his hermitage in the valley, and when they too heard the song from the thorn bush, they searched and found a wooden statue depicting the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus on her left arm. They built a chapel there. After that, the song was never heard again. In place of the chapel, the pilgrimage church of Maria zur Kette now stands on the square, with the statue outside above its main door. Many have found help from it, and various physical ailments, especially eye diseases, are also banished by the water from the well.

        Oberharmersbach, a village nestled in a valley with many side valleys, has a population of around 2,500. The inhabitants of this valley came into contact with Christianity very early on.

        A "parish church in Oberharmersbach" is documented as early as 1206. At that time, the religious life of the community was closely linked to the monastery in Gengenbach and the Diocese of Strasbourg. Since 1821, the parish of St. Gallus in Oberharmersbach has belonged to the Archdiocese of Freiburg.
