In 1804, a water mill of French origin was built by Bertrand Loisel on the right bank of the northern branch of the Geul in Valkenburg. Because of its origin, this mill was called the French Mill. The mill was built directly in front of the oil mill (later bark or tannery) on the left bank and was already mentioned in the 16th century.
In 1926, permission was granted to replace the two wooden water wheels with one wheel. Due to problems with the water regulation in the Geulbranches, the new wheel could not be installed until 1929. The water wheel was made of iron and had a diameter of five meters and a width of 1.9 meters.
Shortly after the Second World War, the mill was shut down.
The mill building was restored from 2006 to 2008.

The water mill on the Lindenlaan in Valkenburg is relatively young. In 1804, the owner of the De Halder estate, Van Pallandt, applied for permission to add a second wheel to his existing oil and bark water mill so that he could also grind grain. Before that, he sold the Halder and associated goods to the military camp manager Bertrand Loisel, originally a Frenchman. Loisel had settled in Maastricht around 1800.

The notarial deed from October 1804 states that the sale includes an oil and bark mill, and that construction of a grain mill had already begun. The tools for operating the mills and materials already purchased for the construction of the grain mill are also handed over. The buyer is obliged to continue to exploit the grain mill.

Loisel completed the grain mill opposite the oil mill on the Geul. There can therefore be no question of a second wheel at the oil mill, as was envisaged in the original application. The Frenchman Loisel, who died in 1822, lives on in the name of the mill. The oil mill, which was in operation until 1925, took over the name: later reference is made to the French mills.
