Colonel von Stauffenberg was a key player in the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, and as chief of staff to the commander of the reserve army, he played a key role in the subsequent "Operation Valkyrie", the attempted coup d'état. After the operation failed, he was summarily shot in the courtyard of the Bendlerblock in Berlin on July 20 or 21, 1944, on the orders of Colonel General Friedrich Fromm.
