Fishing has long been Skagen's most important source of income. However, the city had no port, and the fishermen had to pull their boats on the sand or by horse winds. In the 1880s, there was a plan to create a connected through canals, located at the same time Skagerrak and Kattegat double port, but the considerations quickly rejected. A decade later, the plans for the construction of a port had come to fruition in 1904. Thus, after three and a half years of construction Skagen Havn was opened on November 19, 1907 by King Frederick VIII solemnly.

Skagen Havn is currently still one of Denmark's largest fishing ports. The most recent expansion was completed in spring 2015. In addition, today large roll-on ferries and cruise ships can start the port. And in the marina, there are often tall ships to admire, which head for the North Atlantic from here.
