                                            The Bärenfels castle ruins, formerly also called Steinegg, are located at the entrance to the Wehra Gorge high above Wehr at the entrance to the Hotzenwald. Its origins are unclear. In the 13th century, Bärenfels Castle appears to have come into the possession of the Lords of Schönau. Later, the Margraves of Hachberg were the owners. They left the castle to the Lords of Bärenfels, a knightly family from Basel, after whom Bärenfels is now named. The castle ruins have been prepared for visitors by the Black Forest Association since the end of the 19th century.
