An impressive building in preparation for war

The Hindenburg Bridge - like the Ludendorff Bridge near Remagen and the Kronprinzenbrücke near Neuwied-Engers - was built for purely military reasons from 1913 to 1915 to enable soldiers and military equipment to be transported to the western front during the First World War. The railway bridge established a connection between the Rhine routes via the strategic railways in the Nahe and Glan valleys to Saarbrücken.

At 1175 meters, the bridge was extraordinarily long. In the foreland it consisted of the vaulted bridges, some of which are still preserved today, and in the river area it consisted of a 741-meter-long steel bridge that rested on eight basalt pillars.

During the Second World War, there were several air raids on the structure. However, pioneers of the Wehrmacht finally destroyed the Hindenburg Bridge in March 1945 to hinder the advance of the American armed forces. Reconstruction has been discussed several times, but has not yet been implemented.
