"From a bench on the banks of the leisurely flowing Niers, you have a beautiful view of the mouth of the Nette from this water. Both rivers shape the landscape of the left Lower Rhine. The Nette has its origins in Viersen-Dülken.

The Niers rises in Kuckum, a district of Erkelenz, and after 112 kilometers finally reaches the Maas near Gennep in the Netherlands.

People discovered early on the special nature of the area where the Nette flows into the Niers. Nearby on the left bank of the Nette was a round hill surrounded by a ditch. A stone sacrificial knife found there suggests that the Menapians, a Celtic-Germanic tribe, used this place for their rituals.

Both rivers have an eventful history. They once supplied the defensive moats of Wachtendonk. The water of the Nette also fed the swamp area, which provided a natural obstacle to attackers in the west.

Over the last few centuries, the river courses have repeatedly been artificially relocated and straightened, for example to enable mills to operate and to protect agricultural areas from flooding. A rethink has now taken place.

The first sections of the river have already been redesigned to be more natural and long-missing species, such as the white stork, are returning."
