Annecy is also known as the “Venice of the Alps” because of its many canals.
In 2012 Annecy was named Alpine City of the Year. The Palais de l'Isle is considered the city's landmark. This medieval structure is located in the middle of the Thiou River, but is accessible to visitors thanks to the two pedestrian bridges and now serves as a local museum. The late Gothic Saint-Pierre Cathedral and the beautiful Jardins de l’Europe gardens are also among the “must-sees” in Annecy. The pilgrimage church of La Visitation, located on a hill, offers a great viewing point.
