In 1377 the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Winrich von Kniprode, had a permanent castle built on the Ryne (1339 Renus von Baltic renis - water channel), which belonged to the Coming Balga, on the site of an earlier Prussian rampart. Presumably, a settlement also arose together with the order castle, but it was not mentioned in a document until 1405. Below the Ordensschloss an underground canal connects the Matussekteich, a silted bay of the Ollofsee, with the mill pond of the former Ordenshausmühle and the Rheiner See in the city center.

In 1393 the Kommende Ryne, later High German Rhine, was built, which can no longer be traced after 1468. The most famous Commander of the Rhine was Rudolf von Tippelskirch, who had also made a name for himself in the colonization of East Prussia.

After the secularization of the order state to the Duchy of Prussia in 1525, an official governor held office in the Rhine until 1775. Source Wikipedia
